Abstract

The editors of the Revista do Instituto Geológico decided to reprint an important overview prepared by Professor Fernando Flávio Marques de Almeida: Geological foundations of the relief of the State of São Paulo (Fundamentos geológicos do relevo paulista). Professor Fernando [1906-2013] was the most influential Brazilian geologist of all time. The author not only characterized in detail relief features, but also described the relationship of relief domains to the different rock units, their structures and tectonic control. The classification of provinces, zones and subzones developed in 1964 was reviewed, for land use planning, by a team of the Institute for Technological Research of the São Paulo State (IPT), with the active cooperation of Professor Fernando, between 1979-1981. Only the geomorphological map at 1:1,000,000 scale, together with an explanatory note, was published. A set of partial maps at 1:250,000 scale, on which the research was based, remains unpublished.
