Abstract

The Sérgio Mezzalira Paleontological Collection and Laboratory, currently housed in Environmental Research Institute of the Secretariat for Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of the São Paulo State, dates back to the Geographic and Geological Commission of the State of São Paulo (1886-1931) and includes collections of vertebrates, invertebrates and plant fossils from different regions of Brazil. This contribution tells the history of this important collection and its relevance for paleontological research in addition to highlighting possibilities for its use in teaching and dissemination of science.
