Editorial

Abstract

This thematic section is dedicated to advances in the area of ​​Paleontology, with contributions from specialists from different areas, with the objective of discussing or analyzing novelties of global or local repercussion regarding Brazilian fossils, gaps in scientific knowledge in certain paleontological themes, methodological advances, contributions of paleontology in the oil industry, among other topics. The Revista do Instituto Geológico (1980-2020) has always published papers in the area of ​​Paleontology and we intend to continue in Derbyana, starting with this section in 2022 and continuing for the coming years. This collection of works, in addition to illustrating the state of the art, also points out unsolved problems and future perspectives.
This section was organized with the collaboration of professors Marcello G. Simões (UNESP), Paulo Alves de Souza (UFRGS) and Thomas Rich Fairchild (USP). We also appreciate the support of the Brazilian Society of Paleontology in this initiative.
In the Preface to this section, we include a brief essay by Prof. Setembrino Petri, who celebrated his 100th birthday this year, on the importance of Orville Derby, who is honored by the title of this periodical, in his career and to Brazilian Paleontology in general.
