Derbyana is a open access and peer-reviewed journal dedicated to Geosciences of the Environment Research Institute of the Secretariat for Environment, Infrastructure and Logistics of the State of São Paulo, following the Revista do Instituto Geológico (ISSN 0100-929x, eISSN 2176-1892),  Instituto Geológico, from 1980 to 2020.

Derbyana aims at publishing original and unpublished, scientific and technological articles on Geosciences and related areas. This Journal also publishes review articles, maps and charts, short communications. commments and replies of articles.

This Journal is edited anually and adopt the continuous and immediate publication of articles after their acceptance. The journal team is assisted by a permanent advisory body, formed by eminent Brazilian and foreign scientists, specialized in different areas of Geosciences. 

The name Derbyana is a tribute to Orville Adelbert Derby (1851-1915), one of the patrons of Geosciences in Brazil and director of the Comissão Geographica e Geologica do Estado de São Paulo, created in 1886. This commission carried out pioneering researches on soil , climate, geomorphology, geology and hydrography within the State of São Paulo, Brazil, and gave origin to several scientific institutions in the State of São Paulo, such as the Instituto Geologico, Instituto Florestal, and Instituto de Botânica, Instituto Geográfico e Cartográfico, Instituto de Astronomia, Geofísica e Ciências Atmosféricas, Museu Paulista e Museu de Geologia.

Peer Review Process

The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Before the peer-review process, all the manuscripts are checked using the software anti-plagiarism Crossref Similarity Check powered by iThenticate.

Manuscripts will be submitted to critical analysis by least two ad hoc reviewers indicated by the Editorial Board. Authors will be identified in the manuscripts received by the Reviewers (single blind review). Manuscripts not accepted for publication are returned to the main author. After the review process, the manuscript will be sent for review by the author. Upon acceptance of publication, authors will receive proof of the manuscript for correction.

 

Ethical aspects and editorial policies

Publishing an article involves several stages, where the editors, authors and reviewers have different responsibilities in order to respect rules on good conduct in research and ethical standards. The journal considers misconduct the practices of falsification of data, different forms of plagiarism, omission of authorship credits, among others.

Below is a summary of the responsibilities of each part involved in the publication process.

  • Authors’ responsibilities

 - to confirm that the manuscript submitted to the Journal should be original and unpublished, and should not be submitted for simultaneous publication in other journal.

- the concepts formulated and the veracity of the information in the manuscripts are sole responsibility of the respective author(s).

- plagiarism, fraudulent use of data, citation manipulation and false authorship will be not tolerated in any circumstances.

- if part of the manuscript contain overlapping or closely related content to any submitted or published articles, the authors should provide to the editor a copy of these ones in order to evaluate the scientific merit of the manuscript.

- illustrations and graphs from other sources should be credited, or be accompanied by permission from their copyright-holders, if applicable.

- all the authors should significantly contribute to the research and approve the publication of the manuscript.

- quotes and bibliographic citations of the manuscript should be referenced appropriately.

- submissions that are not in accordance with the journal rules (Instruction to Authors) will be returned.

- the authors should disclose any potential conflict of interest, involving personal, institutional or financial aspects.

- if the work involves material sampling, the authors should ensure their deposit in legal institutions, if applicable, for sharing and further use by others, respecting the government regulations.

- after the publication of the manuscript, the authors should notify promptly the editor if any error is identified, in order to publish an erratum, addendum or notice. 

- it is highly recommended that the manuscript mention the financial support that helped the development of the research.

  •   Reviewers’ responsibilities

 - to contribute to the editorial decision-making process in order to improve the quality of the manuscript.

- the review of the manuscript should be clear and objective, and made in a timely manner (according to the editorial calendar).

- to notify the editor of any content in the manuscript that was previously published. 

- reviewers should be aware that have no potential conflict of interest with respect to the research (personal, financial, institutional), if necessary abstaining from the reviewing process.

- to indicate related published papers which are not yet cited by the authors.

- the reviewers should ensure that material submitted to the journal remains confidential while under review. Reviewers are aware of the identity of the authors, but authors are unaware of the identity of reviewers (Single-blind peer review).

  •  Editors’ responsibilities

 - to ensure the constant improvement of the journal, implement the editorial policies, and assist the authors and reviewers in the publication process.

- editors have complete responsibility to reject/accept a manuscript, based on its  originality and scientific relevance.

- maintain the integrity of the original scientific content.

- to use tools for detect plagiarism, fraudulent use of data, citation manipulation and false authorship.

- to promote publication of corrections, clarifications or retractions, when errors are detected.

- manuscripts under review should be treated confidentially.

- editors should not have any conflict of interest with respect to manuscripts and authors.

- to ensure anonymity of reviewers.

- in case of complaints of an ethical nature or interest conflict, to adopt reasonable procedures to investigate their veracity .

  •  Publisher`s responsibilities

 - the Geological Institute belongs to the Environmente Secretariat of São Paulo State. The institute shall assist the editorial board to ensure the good conduct in the publication practice, according to the rules that have been outlined above.

Procedures for dealing with misconduct and unethical behavior:

- any problem related to misconduct and unethical behavior (plagiarism, falsification of data, omission of authorship credit, among others) should be informed to the editor at any time, accompanied by the evidences and documents that will be retained for ascertainment. The editor shall investigate and can be assisted by the editorial board and the reviewers for the decision making. The authors will be informed and should be given the opportunity to respond to any complaints. The editor should take appropriate measures (correction/erratum, notice, editorial, formal retraction), depending on the seriousness of the fact.

All the content of the journal is licensed under the Creative Commons BY attribution.

The authors retain the copyright and full publishing rights without restrictions.

There are no fees for submitting and evaluation of the manuscripts.

Periodicity

Annual, with continuous publishing.

Archiving and Repository policies

Derbyana uses the PKP Preservation Network (PKP PN) archiving service provided free of charge by the OJS platform. As for its repository policy, it is registered in the DIADORIM service (Directory of Editorial Policies of Brazilian Scientific Journals), managed by the Brazilian Institute for Information in Science and Technology (IBICT).

History

Derbyana follows the Revista do Instituto Geológico (1980-2020) and the journal of the Instituto Geográfico e Geológico, o I.G.G. (1943-1968), which were preceded by the scientific bulletins of the Comissão Geographica e Geologica do Estado de São Paulo, published since 1889.
